Fund Directions webinar: Fund boards and the challenges facing management

Monday October 19, 2020
11am ET/ 8am PT

Asset managers face a number of challenges as the financial services industry undergoes growth, consolidation and change.

In our upcoming webinar with John Hancock independent board chair Hassell McClellan and Daniel Kern, independent director at Green Century Funds/CIO TFC Financial Management, we will take a deep look at what role the board needs to and should play in its ongoing oversight of management as they confront the following headwinds:

• The many and increasing number of competitive products such as ETFs, SMAs and Alternative Pooled products
• Decreasing margins
• The rising costs of regulatory compliance and keeping up with new and needed technology, particularly cybersecurity and artificial intelligence
Other topics time permitting: replacing redeeming shareholders, boutique and niche organizations and diversity/responding to social justice issues

Panelists:

Hassell McClellan is the board chair at John Hancock Funds, independent trustee and chair of the compliance committee at Virtus Mutual Funds, lead independent director of the Barnes Group and associate professor (retired) of Finance and Policy at Boston College’s Wallace E. Carroll School of Management. He is also a member of the Mutual Fund Directors Forum Risk Oversight Working Group.

Daniel Kern is an independent director on the board of the $700m Green Century Funds, the first fossil fuel-free mutual fund complex. Kern created the board’s investment oversight committee, which he chairs. He has also helped the board navigate challenges such as significant growth in assets under management, the launch of Green Century’s first international fund in 2016, and the adoption of fair valuation pricing for the international fund.

Kern, a 25-year fund industry veteran, is also the chief investment officer of TFC Financial Management.
